SUNY Council on Writing Conference 2017

Theme: “Defining Success in College Composition: Rethinking Writers, Writing, and Pedagogy”

Dates: Friday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017

Venue: Whitney Hall, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, NY

We invite researchers, tutors, and writing instructors to rethink what counts as success in college composition. Presentations that share theoretical and practical ideas about college writers, writing, and pedagogy are welcomed. We encourage submissions that address the relevance of college writing to undergraduate education, the workplace, and globalization.

Participants need not be current or past SUNY faculty; we welcome submissions from all interested parties regardless of institutional affiliation.

Proposals may address topics such as, though not limited to, the following:

  • the diversity of contemporary college writers
  • integrating or segregating ESL students?
  • modern psychology and writing
  • college composition as a human or social science?
  • writing as sociocultural dialogue
  • writing in response to reading
  • writing in response to service learning
  • genre studies and college writing
  • creative writing as composition
  • the ethics of pedagogy
  • the role of technology in pedagogy
  • the blended classroom
  • the flipped classroom
  • collaboration between secondary and postsecondary faculty
  • collaboration between full-time and contingent faculty
  • establishing or sustaining writing programs
  • the idea of a writing center today

Presenters may propose individual sessions of 20 minutes. In addition to traditional panel presentations, we encourage presentations in alternative formats, including roundtables, workshops, discussions, and other formats that increase audience participation. We also encourage undergraduate participation and will provide one break-out room for undergraduate research.
